What Rainbow-Washing Gets Wrong About the LGBTQ+ Wine Drinker
Every June, it's the same thing.
The logos suddenly turn into rainbows. The limited-edition cans show up at the front of the store. The captions get a little more colorful. And by July 1st, it's gone. Like it never happened.
I've spent most of my career in the wine industry, and I've watched this cycle enough times to know what it actually is. Not celebration. A costume.
Here's what those brands never seem to understand: we notice. We always notice.
We're not a demographic you activate for thirty days and shelve for eleven months.
LGBTQ+ folks are some of the most engaged wine drinkers out there, full stop. We host the dinner parties. We build the chosen-family tables. We show up with a bottle we already know is good, because we picked it with intention. We care. We really love wine.
But try walking into a wine shop and finding a wine actually made with us in mind, not just marketed at us for one loud month.
That's why Family Room exists.
Why a Queer-Owned Wine Brand Doesn't Take a Break in July
Being Queer-founded and Queer-run was never a campaign for us. It's just who we are. In January and June and every month in between. There's no expiration date on it, and it doesn't come down with the Pride display.
It shows up in the wine itself. In the stories we tell over the glasses we pour. In the Family Room Grant Program, which puts real money behind LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs instead of just a hashtag.
We want the same thing from a brand that everyone wants. Honesty. Not a performance of allyship but the real, unglamorous, sustained version of it.
What an LGBTQ+ Wine Brand Looks Like Beyond Pride Month
Family Room isn't trying to be your Pride Month wine. We want to be the bottle in your kitchen on a random Tuesday. The one you bring when you're finally introducing your partner to your parents. The one you always have handy because it feels like home.
That's what representation actually looks like to me. Not a campaign. A constant.
We're getting closer to launch, and we can't wait to show you what we've been building.
Join our email list, and we'll make sure you're the first to know when Family Room can finally be in your glass.
Here's to showing up in every season, not just the loud one. We'll see you around the table.
